Gardens for walking through

Active transport advocates and verge gardeners have a lot in common.

We’re pleased to see the emphasis on pedestrian comfort and safety, with footpaths being described as transport corridors, made it into the story about verge gardening on ABC Gardening Australia last night.

• Verge gardens help street trees survive and thrive so they can give more shade and cool our streets

• Gardens make walking more interesting with more to see, changes with weather and seasons, and creating landmarks, than ubiquitous mown verges

• Street trees and gardens can help slow traffic down

Some points for gardeners from the program…

• Height matters. Keep sightlines clear.

• No sharp, spiky or thorny plants.

• Keep strappy leaves back from the path as they can become trip hazards and get trapped in wheels.
